The Achievement of Persistence

I come from a barren mountain place in Fuchang Village of Yunnan.

I am the eldest child in my family. The family’s income only comes from growing crops on a few acres of farmland. Since I was little, I have always seen my mother busy working in and out of the house. She is the backbone of the family and also the motivation for my sister and me to study. My father does some work occasionally, but he is alcoholic. He often makes troubles and beats my mother when he is drunk. His drinking problem and domestic violence behavior have left a shadow in my heart. I really hope that he will quit drinking and stop beating my mother, but he never listens to me. Not only does his severed drinking bother everyone in the family, but also affects his health. I remember when I went home from school on weekends, my father was always drunk and my mother was the only one to be tortured after all. I felt so upset that my mother was treated like that. So I told myself that I have to study hard and let my mother live a good life in the future.

My family is very poor. In addition, my father drinks all day, so my mother has to work hard to support the family. She has tried her best to keep us in school, but my father doesn’t care about that. My mother always worries about our tuition fees. In order to borrow money, she has to go around the neighborhood. Sometimes people give her cold shoulder and look down on her. They always feel that we owe them, and often make my mother work for them for free. In their eyes, my mother is just like a machine, waking up early and working till dark every day. Only we know how exhausted she is and she does everything she can just because of us. In fact, she is not in good health. She coughs every day, but doesn’t have the money to get a thorough checkup. She is uneducated, so she can only do the roughest and most tiring labor work, such as digging the ground, carrying stones, etc..Therefore, it really gives me the strength and motivation to study hard and get a good education.

In 2006, the teacher knew about my family situation and recommended me to PEACH Foundation. They offered me RMB400 yuan in financial aid per semester. After paying the tuition and miscellaneous fees, the rest was reserved for living expenses. PEACH also sent us some clothing during winter, which includes scarves, gloves, socks, and thermal underwear. I deeply felt the warm love that PEACH brought to me and their help did relieve my mother's burden. She no longer had to look at people's cold faces and worry about my tuition fees.

Year 2006 was a brand new start for me, and I had the honor to participate in the summer camp. Aunt Jeng’s view of "Happy Life" made me feel optimistic and cheerful. I have learned a lot from that camp.

In July 2009, I graduated from middle school and was admitted to high school. The good news is that I can learn more and become a high school student envied by everyone. The bad news is that my family cannot afford the high school tuition fees which are 2 to 3 times more than the junior high. Moreover, my sister is about to enter the third year of junior high school, and the family’s finances will be overwhelmed. This will put more stress on my mother and her health condition makes me worry even more, but I never give up.

While other students were enjoying the long and leisurely summer vacation, I was busy working for my tuition. I went to the county pharmacy to help others sell medicine every day from 8 am to 10 pm. When school started in September, I have earned 1,000 yuan, which was still not enough to pay for my tuition and other expenses, but the relatives helped me a little, so I could continue my education. I felt very tired at that time and wanted to quit school, but PEACH continued to support and encourage me, which made me stick to it till now. Since the expenses of high school were more than middle, PEACH bursary increased from 400 yuan per semester to 800 yuan per semester. In this way, my living expenses for one semester were settled and I didn’t need to ask any money from home, so my mother could have a little break. Without foundation’s help, I think I would have dropped out of school and wandered around aimlessly. It was PEACH who nurtured me and gave me a bright future. When I am thinking back now, these past experiences have given me plenty of advance trainings in life, which improve my ability to survive and resist stress.

After graduating from high school, I was admitted to Yunnan Agricultural Vocational and Technical College to study food technology and inspection. In 2014, I graduated from college and started to work. Since then, I pay for my sister’s livening expenses in school, so my mother can work less. When I go home during the New Year, I buy some new clothes for my parents. My father doesn't drink anymore and can do some easy work at home. Now my sister also graduated from university, and she has already found a job. The people in our village who once looked down on us are now envious of our family. What we can achieve today is the result of persistent learning and studying hard.
