A letter to sponsor – by 02069 Zi Qian Rong

Translated by George Wang

Six years ago, my younger brother quit school so that I could stay on. Nevertheless, my tuition and school expenses still overwhelmed our meager capability. In addition, my parents had to endure the snipes and sneers from other people. When I felt hopeless and was on the brink of quitting, you came to my rescue. It was your caring love that provided me with the courage to continue.

With your support I became a college student, an enviable status for many villagers. I came from an uneducated, poor family. Our house is far away from the school. I did not attend school because I needed to stay home to take care of my brother. I used to carry my brother on my back and walked to the one-room, single-teacher school and observed the teaching from a distance. When I was eight years old, my parents bought me a pencil, a notebook and gave me the permission to go to school. With no official textbooks, I managed to finish the first grade. At school, I was frequently the object of bullying. All these difficulties reinforced my desire to complete my education and rise up from this backward county. I became the best student in the village and was admitted to a prominent high school, one that was beyond my means. It was at this juncture that you extended your hand and lifted me from my plight. You raised me to what I am today and set me up for a better tomorrow. Thank you.
