17434 Wu XX, 8th Grade, Female

Translated by Sara Qiu

I live in a family that has been tortured by illness. Mum fell ill since when I was born. My father struggled with earning money for paying our school and treating my mother’s illness. In my family, there were 3 older sisters studying. My mum passed away when I was 4 years and a half. All neighbours said I couldn’t live much longer however I strongly survived. Because of my mother’s death, my 3 older sisters had to drop out school and returned home.

Afterwards my father fell ill, the youngest of my older sisters had to work and earn money. At that year I was about to start 7th grade. All classmates bullied me, my father worked outside all day and I didn’t dare to go to my relative’s place. Afraid of being bullied again, I remained at home all alone for one year.

As my sister advanced in middle school, I could only work on my own. I tried in 5 different places, but because I was too young they all dismissed me. At the end, I could just help others wash the dishes, mop the floor. After a month of torture, I got my pay. I couldn’t waste money because I still had to buy a few books and also pay material fee.

With age, I grew up, my dad became old, my older sister was going to marry and I was soon entering high school. I have always been eager for high school life, college life, expecting to see whether the future is as good as I think.
