Translated by Sara Qiu

That year, our family could not maintain our means of livelihood. Therefore, my dad, unable to move freely, went to work to the city with other relatives from the village. A few months after, mum told us a friend of her was muddling along quiet well, so she invited her to earn money together. Mom made a decision without discussing it with us before. We didn’t blame her, because we believed in her. At that moment my father didn’t have a phone, so we couldn’t tell him the news. Before leaving mum told us a lot of things and made us take care of ourselves. My sister and I agreed and let her go to work, agreed that she would take care of herself. We went to sleep, and when we woke up in the morning we realized mum wasn’t home already. We didn’t even know when she left, and wondered why she left that early? We didn’t mind because she told us she was going to go to work.

After a few days, a lot of people came to our place, all my uncles. I didn’t know what happened. My grandparents told me to sit still, afterwards, my sister came. My older uncle just let us know: “Mum is missing! A few days ago, she took all father’s money and run”, I was stupefied. My heart felt that it was impossible, mum wouldn’t definitely do that kind of thing, she wouldn’t abandon our home, even less my sister and me. but the reality was like it was, nobody dared to change it. Mum left, she completely left. We didn’t dare to tell this to my dad, we didn’t want to see him sad. From the inside we started to hate mum, to hate that she abandoned us, abandoned my dad and abandoned our family. My father passed out the day he came back and realised about my mother. My dad became more thin and pallid, way more than before.

From then, our family struggled more. There wasn’t money for paying my sister’s school, so she had to drop out and go to work. Mum has already left for three years, I still cannot forget the pain she has left us. We cannot live in our house anymore. There are holes everywhere because of the rats. So, we went to live with my grandparents. Our home has no money, it is my sister’s salary that let me study. But her salary is not enough to maintain our family’s livelihood. Because of my father’s leg deformity and inability to move freely, he doesn’t go to work. Our family’s livelihood relies on my sister’s efforts and from the potatoes crops. Our grandparents are becoming older, the family is then sustained by my dad.
